Each month we recognise a K2 consultant who has received outstanding client feedback on their recent project.
This month the K2 Consultant of the Month is Oleg Trofimov, an ABAP developer from Russia.
Read our interview with Oleg below.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I graduated from Perm Technical University with a degree in computer software in 2012.
At senior university years, like all students, I began to think about who I want to work with and who I see myself in the future. I saw an opportunity advertised at BC Soft, which implemented the SAP system that I had never heard of before. I decided to try and since then I have worked as an SAP consultant. During this time I worked for 2 companies and in the end I decided to try as a freelance developer. As result of this experience I started working with K2.
During this time I took part in a variety of projects working on the implementation, maintenance and localization for enterprises in the oil and gas, metallurgical and retail industries as an ABAP developer. During these projects I worked in the MM, SD, FI, PS and RE-FX modules. Thanks to the experience I gained, I succeeded in mastering many standard functions, such as: development of Alv-reports, PDF-forms, Excel, Word reports, BSP and WEBDYNPRo applications, expansion of standard functionality, integration with other systems and worked with new functionality such as FIORI and HANA.
What was your most recent K2 project?
My last project with K2 was a project to introduce a SAP system into a nuclear power enterprise. My tasks included: expanding standard web applications, development of reports and expansion of standard functionality.
Among technical difficulties there was a lack of experience in the PPM module, this challenge was solved by searching for information on technical sites dedicated to SAP. This was the only challenge I faced on this project, the rest of the project went well. Well-written regulations, high-quality specifications and qualified consultants and management.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Programming combines elements of art, science, mathematics and engineering. Since my childhood I’ve loved these things, I like both the process of writing programs and the end result, especially if this result suits the customer. It’s nice to realize that the ideas and thoughts about how it should be, there is already a finished product that automates the process and simplifies the work for people.
The more complex and interesting the task is, the more satisfaction you get when you complete it and see the result. I like that there is no single way to achieve the goal. To solve the same problem, you can use different algorithms and you can not say whether one way was right or wrong.
Which technical development do you think will have the biggest impact on your field over the next few years?
In my opinion progress in the field of creating artificial intelligence will greatly change our society in a few years. Modern people, especially in a busy city, receive a lot of information and processing this data takes time.In the future, many tasks for processing information will be done by artificial intelligence.
Simple neural networks are able to solve problems that previously artificial intelligence could not solve. For example, recognition of speech, photos of people, various objects, paintings of pictures, getting the fastest direction on the map and taking into account external factors.
The development of these technologies will radically change the life of a person, simplifies aspects of people’s lives and in some cases it completely replaces. Perhaps this will apply to writing programs.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out as a freelance IT consultant?
As they say the most difficult thing is to start. Firstly decide what you need and if you are ready for it. Secondly be prepared for the fact that you have to work hard, be more flexible, be prepared to take on tasks which were performed by other people when you were a full-time employee, the result is worth it.
