Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is becoming an increasingly significant part of our working lives and is currently the fastest-growing segment of the global enterprise software market. The research firm Gartner reported that revenue grew by 63.1% in 2018 to $846 million. They also estimated that currently, less than 10% of large enterprises deploy RPA software in their daily functions, but by 2020 this could rise to 40%.
Although many roles are predicted to become augmented with RPA, a report by the World Economic Forum estimates the implementation of RPA will create 133 million new jobs. As adoption of RPA grows, there will be an increasing need for professionals with RPA skills. To capitalize on the potential of RPA, businesses need a workforce that is both familiar with building and monitoring bots as well as having a deep understanding of their business processes.
RPA is here to stay. So how is it going to help us and improve our jobs in the future?
Using the software will free people from having to take up time in their day with repetitive tasks in their jobs. At present, RPA has the capability to undertake a variety of duties such as:
- Opening emails
- Logging into web/enterprise applications
- Moving files and folders
- Copying and pasting information
- Reading and writing in databases
- Retrieving data from the internet
- Connecting to systems’ API
- Collecting social media statistics
But this is just the beginning. As it becomes more sophisticated and harnesses more elements of AI, RPA will be able to undertake more complex roles that will give humans the opportunity to concentrate on what they’re best at, such as communication, strategy and creativity. Also, staff will benefit from more efficient processes, such as internal reporting and onboarding.
Humans being occupied with these more sophisticated, soft-skilled based tasks, while their robot counterparts take care of the routine jobs, will benefit their organisations’ customers. There will be increased human to human contact. This will result in improved, more personal customer service.
