Consultant of the Month: Germán Rubio on 27 Years of SAP Innovation

After 27 years in SAP consulting, Germán Rubio continues to find inspiration and new challenges in the world of enterprise technology. Starting his career as a programmer and transitioning into an MM consultant, Germán has dedicated his professional life to learning and mastering this constantly evolving field.
His experience, deep technical expertise across modules, and dedication to his client’s success have earned him the title of K2 Consultant of the Month.

Germán, who specializes in the SAP MM (Materials Management), SM (Service Management), QM (Quality Management), and PP (Production Planning) modules, offers a behind-the-scenes look at his work and what keeps him engaged after nearly three decades.

Tell us about your most recent K2 project

I’ve been involved in this particular project for over 10 years, serving as the maintenance manager for the MM, SM, QM, and PP modules. In a long-term project like this, the most rewarding aspect is seeing the team recognized as an essential and integral part of the client’s daily operations. Our goal is to ensure stability and continuous improvement, and that recognition validates the hard work we put in every day.

What’s something on the project that you’re especially proud of?

Last year, we designed a new workflow in a short period of time that was a major success. It saved the client a significant amount of money because we implemented the improvement entirely in-house, avoiding the need to outsource the work. Delivering such a high-impact, cost-saving solution using our internal expertise is something I am particularly proud of.

What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge in a maintenance and support role is consistently meeting the client’s changing needs and keeping them at the center of everything we do. We overcame this by being highly adaptable, available, and flexible, which is only possible by being especially customer-focused. By taking on new responsibilities alongside our clients, we achieved tremendous joint growth, strengthening our partnership and technical capabilities.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I greatly enjoy teaching the young people who are just starting in this world and watching their progress. It’s very rewarding to give back, in part, to what my own mentors did for me when I was beginning my career. Helping the next generation of consultants develop their skills and passion for technology is a constant source of inspiration.

What have you learned from this role?

Technically, I’ve learned a great deal in the field of MM (Materials Management) that I wasn’t familiar with, largely because it’s a niche specialization that not many clients offer. Beyond the technical, this role has enabled me to achieve extraordinary personal growth thanks to the talented people I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and work with.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in IT?

I strongly encourage young people to embark on this path. It is not without its challenges, but it has a very promising future. A career in IT allows for immense personal and technical growth, and it is exciting to contribute to the change and progress that technology brings to the world.
