K2 Extra Mile

What started as a one man mission turned into a fantastic collaboration between many K2 employees in raising a substantial amount of money for Bloodwise, the blood cancer charity.

Back in September 2015 Marc Burgess, one of the Senior Associates at K2’s London HQ and already an avid runner, announced he was going to take part in the Thames Path, a 100 mile race along the River Thames during Easter weekend 2016.

With a target of £2,500, the training and fundraising began with a couple of other K2 employees also taking part in the training up to the day of the run last month and K2’s chairman, James McHugh offering up his truck as a support vehicle on the day for the crew.

As you can imagine (or possibly can’t!) 100 miles is a long, long way – 3.8 marathons back to back – so we were mightily impressed that anyone, let alone one of our own, was going to undertake this task!

The charity itself is an incredibly worthy cause, Cancer being a disease that has affected almost everyone in some way whether directly or indirectly. Blood cancer is the third biggest cancer killer in the UK but thanks in part to the work of Bloodwise, two thirds of those now diagnosed with blood cancer survive for at least five years.

As a last push for fundraising before the big day, Marc and K2 colleagues Maciej Gorski and Scott Brown offered up their precious locks for auction to the highest bidders at the London office. This turned into a great bit of Friday afternoon entertainment as many people pooled their cash and took it in turns to shave – This last minute boost helped push the value of donations to a whopping £3,706.54, well exceeding the £2,500 target!

Marc would like to thank all those who contributed: “£3,706.54 and counting has been raised for Bloodwise – the Blood Cancer charity. Outstanding to all who donated, made all the pain worthwhile. Thank you.“
